Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918 )
Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer l is the first of two portraits that Klimt
painted of Bloch-Bauer. Painted in 1907, it has been referred to as
the final and most fully representative work of his golden phase.
Adele Bloch-Bauer (1881-1925) was a wealthy member of Viennese
society and a patron and close friend of Klimt. The picture was
painted in Vienna and commissioned by Adele's husband Ferdinand
Bloch-Bauer. Klimt took three years to complete the painting and
preliminary drawings for it date from 1904.
